RESET! Beasts and Demons is a hybrid choreographic creation, both scenic and digital. Using a motion capture device placed on stage, the movements of three dancers in action are digitalised, virtually augmented and projected in real time onto screens placed behind them, at the back of the stage.

The dancers interact live and in real time with their digital multiples: avatars, virtual allegories, and abstract forms. The combined movements of the camera and the music are immersing the audience between the real and the virtual. Viewers are invited to take part in the performers’ digital explorations on stage, accompanied by their living virtual doubles as they evolve within fantastical, digitally created landscapes projected onto the screen.

RESET! Beasts and Demons explores the connections between virtual and real bodies, as well as the interval and the void as a signifying space. Digital image processing offers the possibility of exploring multiple layers of reality, playing with real time, deconstruction, latency and deferral, and challenging our perception of reality.

The first performances of RESET! Beasts and Demons took place at the ADC Pavilion from 23 to 27 January 2024. Finalized and optimized for touring, the second version of the piece was presented at the ADC Pavilion in January 2025 and at Tanzhaus Basel, as part of Art Basel, in June 2025.

In the context of the Covid-19 health crisis, the 77th Venice International Film Festival took partially place in the presence of an audience, but the Venice VR section was 100% virtual. For the 77th Venice International Film Festival, Cie Gilles Jobin has presented a daily live show in real time, la Comédie Virtuelle – live show, selected in the official competition, in the Venice VR Expanded selection.

La Comédie Virtuelle – live show is a real-time dance piece. The five performers are geographically distant, physically separated by thousands of kilometers but gathered together in a virtual space with the audience, also remotely connected from where they are. The work plays on both presence and absence and the notion of reality, simultaneity and community. As a global digital village, virtual space reduces the distance between bodies to create a meaningful and dynamic common space.

La Comédie Virtuelle – live show is danced simultaneously by three dancers our studio in Geneva one dancer in Bangalore and one dancer in Melbourne and presented live to a live multiuser audience. Based on a robust technology developed in house, by our team, the piece is broadcast in real time and accessible worldwide. This piece is possibly the first dance piece to be broadcast worldwide from multiple locations and in real time.

International collaborative project

Virtual Crossings is an ongoing project aiming at connecting simultaneously clusters of artists to collaborate remotely, on digital and movement related art projects and research projects. Three editions took place so far,  Geneva-Buenos Aires (2020 and 2021);  Geneva-Melbourne-Auckland (2021) , Geneva at Le Plaza cinema (2022).

Virtual Crossings Geneva (2022)

Virtual Crossings Geneva was created specifically for the Plaza’s large space, before its transformation in the fall of 2022. A motion capture system was installed for an unprecedented immersive event using real-time motion capture and live projections on the giant screen and walls of the Plaza.

Cie Gilles Jobin brought together a cluster of digital and movement artists whose common goal is to participate in the creation of a local digital-creative ecosystem of international level to increase knowledge and develop digital experimentation and collaboration in distance and in real time for digital and hybrid projects from the point of view of live performance. At the Plaza, the choreographic artists were: Susana Panadés Diaz, Ivan Larson, Maëlle Deral, and Gilles Jobin, the digital artists: Laurent Novac, Camille de Dieu, Tristan Siodlak, Pedro Ribot and Camilo de Martino and for the music Simone Aubert and Pol.

Virtual Crossings Melbourne – Geneva – Auckland (2021)

How do we build choreographic systems for dancing with those we cannot touch?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, in a world in which the masks and the screens are omnipresent, touching at a distance becomes a choreographic issue. Developing tools to navigate a touchless habitat engages actions of crossing thresholds – between physical and virtual, distant and near – from the perspective of cellular bodies hardwired for touch.

Virtual Crossings Melbourne – Geneva – Auckland is a network of artists engaged in cultivating distant touch through remote collaboration. Initiated and operated by Cie Gille Jobin, this new inter-disciplinary network engages partners in Melbourne, Geneva and Auckland for simultaneous remote performance and research through a virtual architecture embodied through motion capture technology. Virtual Crossings Melbourne mobilises soma-technic states as new spaces for dance to travel safely and with minimal impact on the environment.

Virtual Crossings Buenos Aires – Geneva (2020, 2021)

Virtual Crossings Buenos Aires-Geneva gathered, in a virtual space, two dancers in Buenos Aires and a dancer in Geneva, in the studio of Cie Gilles Jobin.

Thanks to the animation of each performer’s avatars and real-time motion capture techniques, they connected and danced together, in the same virtual space, in real time, even if they were separated by thousands of kilometers. This first project made it possible to consolidate the link between the Argentinian “cluster” and the Swiss one.

This exploration between the different aspects of movement in virtual and real spaces resulted in a public show at the Cultural San Martin during the Noviembre Electronico 2020, as a video projection installation on two screens, set behind the Argentinian dancers, who danced in real time and connected to our dancer in our Geneva studios and a second public show in February 2021 during the Festival Internacional de los artes de Buenos Aires (FIBA).

Cosmogony is a live digital performance in real time featuring 3 dancers being motion captured LIVE at #Studios44MocapLab in Geneva and screened in real time remotely. The movements of the dancers are captured in Geneva, sliced up into digital ‘bits’ and sent instantaneously through the cyberspace to appear as avatars, on screen and in real time for a live audience, thousands of miles away from the company’s studio.

Cosmogony has been presented LIVE in more than 30 cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Singapore, Milano, Paris and has been selected at the SIFA festival in Singapore in 2021, the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, in 2022, the San Francisco Dance Film Festival in 2023 and in 2024 at the Digital Body Festival in London. Cosmogony won the Most Innovative Use of Technology award at  Filmgate Festival Miami 2022.

A low carbon footprint piece offering a sustainable alternative to traditional touring

Building upon the reflections initiated by WOMB (2016), La Comédie Virtuelle – live show (2020), and Dance Trail (2020), Cosmogony’s distribution challenges the traditional methods of disseminating choreographic works in light of climatic challenges and the carbon footprint of productions. Cosmogony staged 60 performances in over 30 cities, equating to 250,000 km that did not need to be flown (February 2026 numbers). For organisers, Cosmogony offers a unique decarbonised distribution model, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional tours.

PRESENTATION

After several projects intended for non-traditional venues (WOMB, VR_I, Magic Windowand Dance Trail), Real Time is a project created for a traditional, proscenium stage, which integrates various technologies, explored, developed and implemented during Gilles Jobin’s previous extended reality (XR) creations.

Real Time features a reflection on the very notion of real time and the different levels of realities that coexist within “real time”: an experiment in which the movement of two dancers is captured before the eyes of the audience and projected in the form of avatars, virtual allegories and abstract forms in real time on various projection surfaces.

PRESENTATION

Altered bodies. Inanimate bodies. Manipulated bodies. Braindance is a journey to the centre of the body in search of time. As the body enters an altered state of the human mind it escapes time, postponing the inescapable destiny of death.

“ Three female bodies are strewn across the floor, face down. As for an exercise in the barracks, a man in training clothes comes to put a piece of blue latex under the groin of one of the bodies. It is certainly not to make it more comfortable, otherwise he would not be dragging it on the floor as if it were a cadaver. The men pull the women around on the floor to drop them further off. Then they undress them, exhibiting the flesh of their buttocks, the curve of a lumbar, a chest. It is hard, raw, frightening.
In order to get away from this macabre sight of quarters of meat in ranks, Gilles Jobin then choreographs a body in the prism of intimacy. Cloaked in the secrecy afforded by the half-light and their nudity, the dancers swirl around on all fours. Glimpses of flesh are shown following the partner’s mood who reveals with a flashlight, sometimes an elbow, then the indentation of a rump. It is neither dance nor is it carnal relationship, but rather the staging of photography in movement, the result of flesh that has once again become splendid in the shiver of this faltering intimacy “
Lisa De Rycke

PRESENTATION

Macrocosm deals with the different levels of perception of a situation when a body, due to exterior elements, becomes the centre of attention. The perception of the one who watches (audience), the one who acts on the body (manipulator) and the one who is the centre of attention (dancer) are totally different.

Macrocosm includes these contrasting viewpoints and places those participants in a live situation where the facts are not just represented but experienced. Macrocosm is a 25- minute solo for Nuria de Ulibarri, with lights manipulated by the choreographer, who also mixes live music specially composed by Franz Treichler.

PRESENTATION

A + B = X is a journey through the human mind and the healing of one’s own body. Half-man/half-woman, the bodies speak a strange language that corresponds to nothing but which means so much. Distortions and impositions, the body as a prison, the body as a living art object.

“I am Me and Me is about Me”
Franko B.

I continued my work where I left off in my last solo, Only You. Working chronologically, it made sense to start from there. The body as sculpture, the body as speech, the body as meaning, the images generated suggest more than they say. It is up to the viewer to look into his own self in order to give the presented images their true significance. My work is based on the complexity of the human mind and its relationship with the body, a modern vision of the body. I work using nudity, for its power of suggestion, like a costume.

My work deals with the body in the present, I deal with the blending of the sexes, not seen as uniformity but as a source of diversity and richness.

VR_I is a virtual reality dance piece in which five spectators are immersed together and in real time in various, disturbingly strange locations. Thanks to immersive technology, the users, represented in the form of avatars, can interact with their teammates with an unprecedented fluidity of movement, while virtual dancers, at times giant or tiny, move around them…
Stunning, unique, social and contemplative, the dance piece addresses our perception of reality and explores new, unchartered and innovative territories for contemporary dance.

A true success story that combines art with creative technology, VR_I is not only an innovative dance piece, it is also the most widely distributed VR installation in the world, enjoying popularity well beyond the usual circle of contemporary dance.

More than 15,000 spectators have now experienced VR_I in nearly 40 cities on 4 continents, including Asia: in 2019, Cie Gilles Jobin’s “Giants” toured for more than a month in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore.
