MARTA BECKET’S DEATH VALLEY – VR augmented documentary (2025-27 )

Marta Becket’s Death Valley is a prototype for an immersive “VR augmented documentary” honoring the life and work of Marta Becket (1924–2017).

An American actress, dancer, choreographer and painter, she settled at Death Valley Junction, in the Mojave desert, California, in 1968. There, she transformed the Amargosa Opera House into a gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), with its interior completely hand-painted by the artist herself. She performed her own original dances on that stage for more than four decades.

While the interior walls and the paintings are exceptionally well-preserved, the building’s exterior walls deteriorate further every year: flash floods and the extreme desert climate threaten the very existence of the theater.

In 2025, we 3D-scanned the theatre and integrated video images of Marta Becket. Thanks to 3D scanning technologies and virtual reality, we have been able to digitally preserve this unique site while giving a new life to Marta Becket’s artistic vision through her dances, her voice, video archives, and immersive 3D reconstructions.
